A 21-year-old national-level kabbadi player was mowed down on Monday afternoon in Hauz Khas, while she was trying to cross the road. Police said the incident was reported from August Kranti Marg near Kamla Nehru College.

According to police, Deepti Yash, a first-year student of Kamla Nehru College, was crossing the road when a Volkswagen Polo coming from the Lajpat Nagar side ran her over. The driver, a 50-year-old woman, reportedly stopped and got out of the car. But when she saw Deepti bleeding on the road, she fled the spot, leaving her car behind, police said.

The woman, who was later identified as Nalini Aggarwal, a housewife, was traced from the registration number of car and arrested from her residence in Jungpura, police said.

“Aggarwal panicked after she saw the girl bleeding profusely. She left the car on the spot with the keys and her mobile phone inside. She was later traced and arrested,” a police officer said.

“Students of Kamla Nehru College and Gargi College, also nearby, gathered at the accident spot. One Pankaj Dheer made a PCR call. Since a PCR is always patrolling next to the girls’ colleges, it reached the spot within minutes and rushed Deepti to AIIMS Trauma Centre,” a senior police officer said.

Deepti, however, was declared brought dead. “The doctors said she had died of excessive bleeding. We have sent the body for a post-mortem examination and her relatives have been informed. A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered against Aggarwal. She is now under judicial custody,” an officer said.

Deepti had topped the Delhi University exams and was also awarded an excellence certificate by the HRD Ministry for topping CBSE exams. She had won around 40 medals in several kabbadi championships held across the country.
