A teenaged girl and her boyfriend were arrested on Monday for fabricating the story of her kidnapping and making ransom calls to her parents in Kidwai Nagar area of Kanpur because they wanted to marry, but did not have any money to set up a house and continue their studies.
Kanpur SSP Yashasvi Yadav said the girl and the boy used a voice-changing software in the mobile phone to make the ransom calls. Both are class XII pass-outs and were preparing for the company secretary’s exam. They have been arrested on charges of criminal conspiracy and forgery, said Yadav.
Circle Officer of Babupurwa Pavitra Mohan Tripathi said Harminder Singh of Kidwai Nagar, who runs a shop selling bicycles and sports equipment, lodged an FIR last evening after he received a phone call about kidnapping of his daughter Sahibajit Kaur (19), who had left home in the morning for the coaching institute at Govind Nagar where she was preparing for the exam.
The caller demanded Rs five lakh, saying the girl would be killed otherwise. The caller later made two more calls, said the CO. By the time the police took the number on surveillance to trace its location, it was switched off.
During investigation, it was found that the calls were made using the SIM card of the girl’s cellphone, but another mobile set. All three calls were made from different locations. Tripathi said they contacted one of girl’s friends who helped the police in scanning Sahibajit’s Facebook account in which the police found the profile of her boyfriend and regular messages.
Police also got the boy’s mobile phone number. On checking its call details and movements, they found that the girl had accompanied him till the last ransom call was made.
The CO added that the officials went to the manager of the coaching institute too, who revealed that the boy and the girl both studied there. They raided the boy’s house at Keshav Nagar locality in Naubasta area around 4 am and found him at his house.
Initially, he denied knowledge of the girl’s whereabouts, but later took the police to a deserted plot behind his house where the girl was hiding. Both confessed having cooked up the kidnapping story to collect a ransom from her parents, the CO said.
Tripathi said that the parents of both knew about their relationship but did not favour it.
