Krrish 3 box office collections set magnificent records, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Singh Saab The Great fall by wayside

The magnificent Krrish 3 box office collections leave very little for Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Singh Saab The Great.

After a relatively dull October month, both moviegoers and trade analysts expected things to brighten up at the box office collections in November. While Krrish 3, and Ram Leela did generate huge numbers, the latest releases Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan and Singh Saab The Great, starring Sunny Deol, failed to meet the rising expectations in Bollywood. In fact, the previous week?s Ram Leela still continues to perform well, indicating the new releases don’t really pack a punch as far as audiences are concerned.

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein

Expectations from Gori Tere… were high, especially since the earlier release, the Imran Khan-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu had done well with their box office collections. Unfortunately, this Karan Johar production failed to impress. ?Gori Tere.. saw a poor opening, and was slightly better on Saturday,? says trade expert Amod Mehra. According to koimoi.com, the film earned Rs.10 crore at the domestic box-office, the break-up being, Rs.3.25 crore on Friday-Saturday each, and Rs.3.50 crore on Sunday. Thus, considering the fact that the film had released in 1560 screens pan India, and the hype involved, its performance has been disappointing. However, Mayank Shroff of Cinepolis says, ?Gori Tere…has performed better in multiplexes, than Singh Saab The Great. The occupancy has been around 50 per cent at our multiplexes.?

Singh Saab Singh Saab The Great

On the other hand, the Sunny Deol starrer, Singh Saab… performed better at single screens, but fared poorly at the multiplexes. Taran Adarsh says, ?SSTG was targetted at the North Indian audience and single screens, so it had a slightly wider release with 2120 screens. It did decent business in northern territories and mass-dominated circuits.? Mehra however feels, that it?s still a let down compared to what was expected from the Gadar… team. Considering the costs involved, the collections may not benefit producers and distributors. The film did slightly better as compared to Gori… and according to director Anil Sharma it collected Rs.23 crore in its opening weekend. However, trade analysts mention that the box-office collection in the opening weekend is Rs.16.25 crore.

Ram Leela crosses the Rs.100-crore mark

Despite the new releases, Ram Leela is still holding well at several theatres. According to official figures, the first week collection of the film was Rs.82.15 crore, but dipped in the second weekend earning Rs. 18.05 crore, with an overall total collection of Rs.100.2 crore. ?Considering the cost of the film and its collections, it?s now in the safe zone. The producers are in a position to make some profit, but whether the distributors will earn money will be clear by the end of the second week,? says Mehra. Taran Adarsh adds, ?With strong audience support all through the first week, …Ram-leela ate into the business of GTPM and SSTG, in several circuits.?

Hollywood releases

Among the Hollywood releases, Last Vegas that released along with GTPM and SSTG, is doing average business. Shroff says, ?Last Vegas had a limited release, but it?s doing average business with 45-50 per cent occupancy at our cinema.?

Screen Forecast

Our Verdict

In the issue dated Nov 22 to 28, Screen had predicted that Gori Tere Pyaar Mein will have a modest box-office opening due to low-key promotions. But, the film?s performance has been dismal. It earned Rs. 10 crore in its opening weekend. Also, our forecast in the issue dated Nov 15 to 22 had stated that Goliyon Ki Raasleela ? Ram Leela will make it to the Rs.100-crore club only if it gets good word-of-mouth publicity. Despite the mixed response, the film has garnered Rs. 100.2 crore, and is doing better than the new releases GTPM and SSTG.
