We are only entertaining people, and I am not being apologetic about it. I just wanted people to have fun, says director as the film crosses Rs 100 cr in box office collections.
Grand Masti has done an astounding business of Rs.100 crore worldwide. Did the collections come as a surprise to you?
I was always sure that the film will cross the Rs.100 crore mark. That the film has done good business is an understatement considering that it is an adult film, which automatically keeps away a segment of the audience?the families. The collections have been phenomenal, (the budget was modest, around Rs.18-19 crore). Though I was not surprised at how it has fared at the box-office, I was taken aback when I learnt that ladies have liked the picture too
What have the reactions to the sex comedy been?
I would not like to call the film a sex comedy because we have not shown any sex in the film. Grand Masti is an adult comedy as it?s replete with adult jokes. Eighty per cent of the people have loved it and said such films should be made in India. They liked the honesty, because today adult jokes are part of everyone?s conversations. Even a child has an Android phone in his hand and has access to everything. You have films showing a lot of violence, rapes, sex and other adult themes, so I don?t understand why we object to adult jokes. We have a BA Pass and a Hate Story with explicit sex, so why are people creating a ruckus over Grand Masti?
Was there any problem with the Censor Board?
I am thankful that the Censors understood the intention and passed this picture. The fact that it was an adult comedy was made very clear in the promos itself, so that people who are not comfortable with such content could stay away. We are only entertaining people, and I am not being apologetic about it. I just wanted people to have fun. With so much stress around, I am happy that I made people laugh for two and a half hours. If I make a family film, the content would be different, something on the lines of Beta or Dhamaal that I made earlier.
Were there any embarrassing moments on the sets because of Milap Zaveri and Tusshar Hiranandani?s raunchy dialogues?
No, everyone was enjoying themselves during the shooting and never felt embarrassed at all. If anyone had felt embarrassed, we could not have put up this kind of a film. All the actors acted in the film without any inhibitions, which is a requirement of an adult comedy. The only thing was that all the actors ? Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani and the girls too? would ask me to enact the scenes. They all copied me perfectly.
Is Masti 3 in the offing?
Let?s see, I am planning to finish Super Nani first. But we will definitely make the third series, as Masti has become a big franchise. With the second franchise crossing the Rs.100 crore mark without an A-list actor means that the people have loved it.
