In a first of its kind initiative, residents of Civil Lines area financially supported the installation of 67 close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the locality in collaboration with the Delhi Police, under the neighbourhood watch scheme. BS Bassi, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, will inaugurate the project during a function at Shah Auditorium on Sunday.
The residents association, ?Club Class?, took the lead in getting their area covered by CCTV cameras. The cameras, spread in 16 clusters and covering over 2,000 households, are connected via internet to a monitoring station set up at the Civil Lines police station.
Delhi police, under the neighbourhood watch scheme, aims to increase the reach of community policing by installing CCTV cameras in areas where residents take the lead. This project comes on the heels of Delhi police officers visiting Surat earlier this year to study the CCTV model started in the city in January 2013, where CCTV cameras, financed by a public-private partnership model were installed in several city localities. Following the Surat visit, Delhi police had announced in June that a ?Business Area Watch Scheme? will be initiated in Dariba Kalan in North Delhi and Greater Kailash I in South Delhi as two pilot projects earmarked for the city. Being prominent business localities, shop owners agreed to financially help in community policing to make their area safer.
