Letters to the editor: Bad education

Apropos of the edit ‘Bad Education’ (FE, March 1), the state of the Indian education sector is appalling, all the more since we are standing at the altar of development and need well-trained human resource in huge numbers. The fact that India has slipped in QS World University Rankings highlights the open secret that education in India after the higher secondary level is more of a transaction than learning. Various colleges and universities have set shop all over the country claiming to provide world-class education to gullible and with-no-option left students. The absence of promotion of quality education from the govt’s end has further lent unparalleled support to this unchecked sector. We need stringent checks on one and all, govt and private institutions and a marked shift from our straitjacketed approach towards teaching till now.

Court decisions

The Supreme Court has ordered commutation of death sentence of Rajiv Gandhi?s killers into life imprisonment. But the Tamil Nadu government has chosen to release the prisoners on the ground that they have been languishing in jail for the last 23 years. If 14 years is considered as the life term, what the Tamil Nadu government did is right. Necessary amendments can be made to call it a 14-year jail term instead of life term.
