Paddy problem

Gurcharan Singh Kalkat, chairperson, Punjab State Farmers Commission, has said that excessive usage of ground water in agriculture in Punjab has reached an alarming level that “Paddy area of 28 lakh hectare can’t be sustained” (FE, December 25). Not only alternative crops consuming less water should be developed but also less water consuming and more productive paddy crop should be invented. This is also a caution for other states like Tamil Nadu that are using excessive ground water, not only for paddy but also for sugarcane cultivation. Another serious problem is that while using ground water, it also consumes a lot of power supply.
