LG Optimus G Pro is edgy enough to catch up with the competition

After unveiling Optimus G Pro in Seoul last February, LG has finally introduced the smartphone in India. It has come much later than its competitors (smartphones priced around Rs 40,000), which have consolidated their positions in the market. Will the delay affect its sales, or does the Optimus G Pro have enough meat to beat the competition?

Build and Design

LG Optimus G Pro is a plastic body with an aluminium frame. The front panel has a 2.1-megapixel camera on top, and a physical home button flanked by back and menu touch buttons. With a screen display of 5.5 inches and a weight of 172 grams, it is slightly heavy. But the back panel’s curved edges gives one a good grip over the phone. Like the Nexus 4, the back panel has a dotted-glitter pattern.

Audio and Video

At 1,920x1,080 pixels and an impressive 400 pixels per inch, it is one of the few phones in the market that offer a full-HD display. The screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 which makes it smooth and protects it from scratches. The touchscreen is very responsive. Both text and images are clear and bright, and viewing angles are excellent. But the screen is highly reflective. One should avoid reading or viewing pictures under direct light.

The speaker, situated on the rear panel, is fairly loud and performs well indoors. However, we wouldn’t recommend using it outdoors. The in-ear headphones have an impressive noise-cancellation quality.

The 13.1-megapixel rear camera’s output is good in bright environments, but suffers in low light. The 2.1-megapixel front camera is good for video chats. The phone has a dual shooting mode which allows one to use both cameras simultaneously.

A 1.7 GHz processor and a 2 GB RAM ensure that the software runs as smooth as butter. Optimus G Pro barely suffered from system freeze or any kind of lag while shifting between or using apps. Rendering in online multi-player games such as ShadowGun was great. The phone has 32GB memory and a 3,140 mAh battery.

Optimus G Pro comes with a customised user interface over Android Jelly Bean (4.1). It offers an overwhelming list of LG apps and features, many of them not necessarily needed on a smartphone. An interesting feature is Q-Slide, which allows multi-tasking with three apps functioning at a time. The Q-Slide feature can
