Here’s what the camera didn’t capture — some action backstage where the stars hung around, with a privileged few for company
A dash of colour. A whiff of stardust. A galaxy of stars. Stunning acts. Head spinning fashion moments. The much-anticipated 19th Annual Colors Screen Awards lived up to its past glory and created new benchmark. B-town came out in full support to celebrate the best of 2012.
Electrifying was the word used by all to describe the proceedings on stage. It’s a word you can trust. When Shah Rukh Khan is the Master of Ceremonies then that’s the way the cookie usually crumbles. He kept the jokes comin’, the repartee flowin’ and had the audience eating out of his hands. His ‘sperm talk’ with Vicky Donor star Ayushmann Khurrana was howlarious. Together The King & The Newbie presented such a risqué stand up romp that it’s bound to be remembered for years to come. SRK also jammed with superstar singer Mika and regaled the audience with some Bolly Panju talk. Deepika Padukone came on for a fun segment with SRK. Karan Johar, who hosted crucial chunks of the show, was at his ebullient best — he cracked smart ones, cheered the winners and also got all emotional when Pamela Chopra, wife of late Yash Chopra walked up to receive the posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for her illustrious husband. Gulzar saab and Rekha presented the award to Mrs Chopra.
The stage was set ablaze with some gravity defying performances by Priyanka Chopra who sat astride an aerial Ganesha, Sonakshi Sinha did the dahi handi act live on the Go Govinda song, K Jo’s Students Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan put up an impressive show on their virgin stage performance. The big moment was of course Rockstar Ranbir Kapoor’s performance wherein he paid tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema with acts honouring the Kapoor Khandaan — from Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor to dad Rishi Kapoor. The surprise package was Ranbir jiving with Helen on O haseena zulfonwaali and with mom Neetu Singh on Ek main aur ek ru. Kodak moments like these make such shows come alive.
By the time you read this, the on stage shenanigans will be aired, discussed and youtubed. But there shall always remain things that no TV cameras can show you — think all classified action backstage that we call as the Star Lounge.
Hanging out with the stars
Star Lounge is the nerve center of any award ceremony — an air- conditioned cozy sitting area backstage where stars cross path, where actresses with their managers in tow opt for that last minute dress fitting before they go on stage. The vibe is buzzy. Small talk is exchanged over chocolate fondue and coffee. A Star Lounge is a networker’s delight and every Gossip Girl’s mecca. Only a chosen few get access to the coveted Star Lounge. We were there and so we give you all the uncensored action:
Amitabh Bachchan, who was awarded the ‘Legend of Indian Cinema’ honour was all praises for Annu Kapoor’s soul stirring speech on the Delhi Braveheart, which he delivered when he won the award for best comic role in Vicky Donor. Incidentally Kapoor shared his award with Abhishek Bachchan, who won for Bol Bachchan. When Sr Bachchan spotted Kapoor in the Star Lounge he went up to him and said, “Sir, aapki speech ne bahut prabhaavit kar diya hume…Dil ko choo gayi.”
Jaya Bachchan, who was amongst the first ones to raise national consciousness with her emotional speech in the Parliament after the Delhi Gangrape incident, waited patiently as her husband and son performed their winner’s duties. Abhishek Bachchan with his warmth and funny repartees was just what the Doctor ordered for all of us highly stressed girls in the Star Lounge. He made everyone smile. We really hoped he would stay back, but he was in a hurry to go home. Why so? Because as he quipped, “I’m on baby duty.” Lucky Aaradhya.
Katrina Kaif, who looked quite fetching in a fabulous Naeem Khan ensemble was seen bonding with Ishaqzaade star Arjun Kapoor and his sister Anshula. Katrina, who had come to the awards after a hectic day’s work, was famished and wanted something to munch on. We offered her chocolates, she was tempted but she resisted. “It’s a bad idea to eat sugar after being hungry for so long,” she said. She made do with some mineral water instead.
When she spotted Arbaaz Khan, Katrina went up to greet him warmly. Arbaaz had graciously received the award on brother Salman Khan’s behalf who was awarded as the Best Popular Actor for Dabangg 2. Katrina reminded Arbaaz that like him, she too had received an award on behalf of Salman at another award function and that “it needs to be picked up since it’s lying in my house”. Katrina also bonded with Neetu Kapoor who was waiting for her turn to go on stage to perform with Ranbir.
It was a big night for Screen Awards darling Vidya Balan, who won her fourth award in a row for Kahaani, leading KJo to joke that they should probably name the Best Actress award as The Vidya Balan award. Vidya was ecstatic and so was her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur, her parents and her new in-laws, who followed her into the Winner’s Corner. Vidya was so happy to see them that she went and touched their feet. It was quite a moment. Incidentally it was quite a moment even on stage when Vidya had given the Best Film Award to her husband for Paan Singh Tomar. Speaking about parents-in-laws. It was heartening to see Sharman Joshi spend some time with his in-laws Mr and Mrs Prem Chopra.
Award shows are all about loving the family. SRK was rehearsing for his anchoring stint but when he got word that wife Gauri and daughter Suhana have arrived at the venue, he left everything to escort them to their seats.
Sunny Leone and husband Daniel Weber were the first to arrive. Since Sunny is absolutely new to the ways of Bollywood, she will need to learn that in B-town, it’s all about BST—Bollywood Stretchable Time. Even though they had to wait, they were most patient. Sunny was ecstatic to go on stage and present an award. Chunky Pandey happily accompanied her.
Aditi Rao Hydari whiled away her time by playing on her iPad. Chitrangada Singh and Arjun Rampal were busy comparing notes about Inkaar with all their industry friends. Parineeti Chopra cheered the loudest when she saw the performance of the stars of Student of the Year. Divya Dutta was most upset when we lost the volume on the Live Feed TV when Gulzar saab was speaking about Yash Chopra on stage. “He’s the one man I really wanted to listen to and I can’t,” rued the self confessed Gulzar fan. By the way when the poet in white kurta pyjama entered the Star Lounge — everyone and we mean everyone got up. Such is the respect he commands, our favourite wordsmith.
And so unfolded the Star Lounge masti. Until the next year then.
