Maruti sales hit, mixed results for others cos

Car sales fell by more than 12% during the month of August largely on account of a 35% dip in the domestic sales of the market leader Maruti Suzuki.

Car sales fell by more than 12% during the month of August largely on account of a 35% dip in the domestic sales of the market leader Maruti Suzuki. While high interest rates and weak economic sentiment continued to deter buyers, it was the lockout of Maruti?s Manesar plant which heavily impacted the market. Maruti Suzuki reported a sharp 40.8% decline in total sales for August?54,154 units as against 91,442 units in the same month last year. The drop is a clear impact of the month-long lockout at MSI’s Manesar plant due to violence and arson on July 18. The company had lifted the Manesar plant lockout on August 21. MSI’s domestic sales during the month stood at 50,129 units, compared to 77,086 units in August last year, down 35%.

Tata Motors reported a 12% growth in total sales at 71,826 units for the month over August 2011.
