Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini A200 versus the Lava Iris Pro 30

Both phones have their pluses and minuses. But still they are worth their buck

The budget Android segment is becoming a bit too cluttered with all Indian manufacturers trying to plug all possible price points between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000. However, in this space it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a differentiator in the Android phones.

Recently, two products caught our attention in this price range ? the Lava Iris Pro 30 and Micromax?s Canvas Turbo Mini A200.

The Lava Iris Pro 30 is the first of the company?s new premium range of smartphones and is priced at Rs 15,499. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200, on the other hand, is a stripped down version of Canvas Turbo priced at Rs 14,490.

Here is a face off:

Design

In terms of design, the Lava Iris Pro 30 is undoubtedly better looking than the Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini A200. The Lava will remind you of the iPhone 4 and has a smooth, rubberised back panel and a metallic chrome rim frames the phone which has a rectangular monoblock design. Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini, like most other Android devices, has rounded corners and curved edges with a visible camera bump. This is a plain jane in comparison to the Iris Pro 30.

Common grounds

The two phones have loads of similarities. For starters, both flaunt 4.7-inch 720p HD displays. The Iris Pro gets an added advantage of having IPS display constructed using Gorilla Glass technology coupled with one-glass solution technique. Both smartphones run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, have 4 GB internal storage and 32 GB micro SD card slots. Both smartphones offer Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi (802.11 b/g/n) for wireless connectivity. Better location services are promised with GPS chip. Lava Iris Pro 30 weighs about 114 grams while the Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini is a shade lighter at 111 grams. Very close in terms of weight, the difference can be negligible.

Spec to spec

Both are powered by MediaTek processors. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200 has a quad-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6582, while Iris Pro 30 is powered by a 1.2 GHz MediaTek MT6589 mobile processor.

The Lava Iris Pro 30 has an 8 megapixel backside illumination image sensor that can record full HD videos at 30 frames per second. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200 also comes with an 8 megapixel auto focus camera with HD videos at 30 frames per second. Both have LED flashes. The Iris Pro 30 has a 3 megapixel camera in the front, while the Canvas Turbo Mini A200 puts a 5 megapixel wide angle camera in the front.

Both are dual SIM phones, with Micromax option for normal SIMs and Laval favouring a mix of micro and normal.

The Iris Pro 30 packs in a slightly better battery at 2000 mAh battery, while the Canvas Turbo Mini has a 1800 mAh cell. This could give the former about an hour more of juice when needed.

Both come pre-loaded with a bunch of apps and even have a some curated lists.

Verdict

The Lava Iris Pro 30 is ahead of the Canvas Turbo Mini A200 in design, camera and battery, but the latter has an advantage in terms of the processor and, of course, the cheaper price tag. Now, it is your pick.
