The body of a 22-year-old, who was missing since September 10, was found today in a canal near GJ Khan Road under Tiljala police station in south Kolkata.
Arijit Ghosh, a resident of 3/G Palm Avenue, had studied at St Xavier’s College and was looking for a job. He was last seen leaving his home for a job interview at Camac Street.
“Later, one of his friends called up and said Arijit would return a bit late because he was supposed to attend a farewell of that friend,” said a family member. “When he did not return till 11 pm, we called him up and he said he would be home in 15 minutes. After that the phone was switched off and we could not trace him.”
This morning, the family received a call from Tiljala police station saying a body had been found from the canal. The relatives identified it as Arijit’s body.
Tiljala police officials are looking into several aspects of the case. Where did Arjiti vanish after saying he would be home in 15 minutes? How and why did he reach the south Kolkata locality?
“We are looking for the friend whose party Arijit went to attend. Tracing the mobile towers, it was found that he was around Theatre Road at 11 pm that day. We have called two of his friends for interrogation,” said an official who is part of the team investigating the case. He added that prima facie, no injury mark was visible on Arijit’s body. The body has been sent for post mortem.
The south Kolkata neighbourhood is known for drug trafficking. A number of drug-dealers gather here for business every night. Cocaine, marijuana and other narcotic substances often change hands at a spot under the bridge near the site at which Arijit’s body was found. The police are examining if Arijit or his friends were given to any kind of addiction.
