Canary Island front runner in the list of winter getaways for Indian travellers

Fuerteventura in Canary Islands offers the best value winter sun break for Indian families this year

The onset of winter season sees Indians getting into the holiday planning mode to get away from the cold. Fuerteventura in Canary Islands offers the best value winter sun break for Indian families this year, according to an annual TripAdvisor cost comparison study conducted by independent research firm, Ipsos. Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands and named Spain’s best rated island in the 2014 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Islands awards, offers travellers a choice of almost 180 hotels, over 1,000 holiday rentals, almost 700 restaurants and over 300 attractions.

A week’s holiday for a family of four in Fuerteventura will cost around INR 51604, which is more than seven times cheaper than the price of the most expensive destination for a winter sun break at INR 388798 in Turks and Caicos, home to the number one Caribbean island. The Canary Islands clearly emerges as winner for families this year as three are named in the top 10 most affordable destinations: Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife. The Caribbean emerges as the most expensive part of the world, laying claim to five of the ten most costly destinations.

The results were taken from TripAdvisor’s TripIndex Winter Sun 2014, an annual report that compares the cost of a holiday in 29 winter sun destinations around the world. The study takes into account the cost of a week’s stay in a two bedroom holiday rental, one week’s car hire, basic self-catering groceries and dinner at a restaurant including drinks for a family of four this winter travel season (December 15 – March 31).

When it comes to accommodation prices across the popular winter sun destinations, Turks and Caicos has the most expensive average rate for a week’s stay in a two bedroom holiday rental, coming in at INR388798. For the price of one week in a holiday rental in Turks and Caicos, a family of four could have over 10 weeks in Goa, with a holiday rental there costing just INR34649 per week.

Tenerife is the cheapest destination to get around as the cost to hire a car for a family of four for one week comes in at INR8782 – around four times less than in St Lucia where hiring a car for a week will set a family back INR34555.

Goa is revealed as the cheapest place for food and beverage at just INR2024 for a dinner out for four, INR106 for two soft drinks and INR314 for two pints of beer. Dinner in the Cayman Islands is the most expensive at INR8470 while Dubai is priciest for drinks with two beers costing INR2142 and two soft drinks INR627.

For families wanting to stock up the holiday rental with some groceries, the best value destination for a loaf of bread is Mauritius, where a family could buy ten loaves at INR29 each for the price of one loaf in the most expensive destination, Turks and Caicos, where a loaf of bread costs INR306. For a pint of milk, Goa and Gran Canaria offer the best value at INR30 while Barbados is the most expensive at INR155.
