Actor-director Nandita Das will act in a Spanish film that will be produced by Pontas Film, a new production company based in Barcelona. The film will be directed by Maria Ripoll, who had earlier directed the Penélope Cruz-starrer Lluvia en los zapatos/ Twice upon a Yesterday, Utopia, My Life in 65 among others. The film will trace the story of a poor, peasant girl who becomes a Bollywood star. “My character is called Mina who is separated from her younger sister Sita, whom she finds in Barcelona after several years. Mina could be seen as a modern Cinderella in Bollywood reaching the peak of stardom from poverty and reunited with her younger sister in a different culture,” says Das, who bagged the project through her agent in Los Angeles who recommended her name to the director and Anna Soler Pont, the scriptwriter.
The film will go on floors on October 17 and will be shot in several locations of Barcelona such as the La Pedrera house and the Park Güell, the Biomedical Research Institute, the downtown Ramblas, the cricket local teams and the beach. While the film is in Catalan, Das’ dialogues will be in English. The film also has several Indian actors with Das’ husband Subodh Maskara playing her on-screen husband.
