This election season, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) prime ministerial (PM) candidate Narendra Modi will be the sole face of the party on the social media – Facebook, Twitter, others. In the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, the party is learnt to have instructed both its Centre and Delhi unit communication cells to simply focus on promoting their PM candidate.
The instructions mark a change in the party?s strategy adopted during the Assembly elections in Delhi. For the state elections, the Delhi unit of the Samvaad cell had been asked to assist every candidate to upgrade their social media skills so that they could interact with voters. Now, the cell will only post about Modi?s speeches, his vision and comments on various issues.
The decision was taken during a series of meetings in Delhi that concluded on Sunday. ?Social media?s importance has been pressed upon by Modi himself at various events. In recent meetings, we have been directed to focus on Modi. This will also constitute responding and re-tweeting Modi?s stand on various policies and issues of national importance,? Khemchand Sharma, social media in-charge, Delhi BJP, said.
Sources said a team of 400 coordinators and over 1,000 volunteers have been assigned the task.
The party has taken a stand on its policy on the Aam Aadmi Party, with the media cell being given instructions not to attack the party. Instead, the cell coordinators will maintain a databank of the promises made by the AAP and whether they are being fulfilled.
?Some of us received electricity bills with no subsidy, even when our usage was below 400 units. We will ensure that people know that they have not been given what was promised by the AAP. While targeting the AAP, our focus will be on issues related bijli-pani,? the BJP social media cell coordinator said.
