Even as abducted NHPC general manager Anil Kumar Agarwal, head of the upcoming 800-MW Tawang Basin Hydro-electric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, remained untraced for the ninth day, his 82-year old mother Nirmala Kumari Sunday appealed to his abductors to release her son without any harm.
Agarwal was abducted on September 21 evening from near Bhalukpong in Sonitpur district when he was travelling by road from Tawang to Guwahati. Police suspect he has been kept confined inside the Sonai-Rupai sanctuary on the Assam-Arunachal border.
The alleged abductors — the Sobijit faction of NDFB — have demanded a sum of Rs 15 crore as ransom for his release. Sources said the abductors initially demanded Rs 20 crore, but had reduced. Police, however, denied having any knowledge about the ransom sought.
CM Tarun Gogoi said police were doing their best to secure the release of the NHPC officer without any harm. “It is a difficult task” Gogoi said.
