Ending months of speculation about his entry into the world of politics, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani on Friday said he was ready to contest the Lok Sabha polls if he got a ticket from Congress.
?Politics is a good platform to serve people. I would like to contribute to it. At this moment I am not looking at any post but just entering the fray,? Nilekani, who is chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), said at a college event in Bangalore.
Nilekani said he was willing to contest the general elections if the Congress gave him a ticket.
He said that more industry leaders should enter politics to bring in a change in the system.
The Karnataka unit of Congress had said last month that a decision on giving a ticket to Nilekani would be taken by the party high command.
Nilekani said talks are going on about the constituency from which he should be contesting. He added that he would join Congress, which has been very ?supportive? to him and his ideas.
The Congress is likely to field Nilekani from Bangalore South, a middle-class centric constituency, known for its antipathy towards Congress since the late 1970s, from where BJP general secretary Ananth Kumar has won five times.
Nilekani said the country needs more good people from all fields, including the corporate world. ?In India the biggest change can be brought about through politics and I want to be there,? he said.
