Satisfied over the progress on Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) promotions of Panjab University teachers, Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) deferred their decision to sit on a dharna outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office. This along with other decision was taken during PUTA’s General Body Meeting (GBM) held at University’s English Auditorium on Monday.
Earlier, giving a deadline of October 31, PUTA had warned the authorities that if the present slow pace of promotions continue and the cases under promotions are not considered at the earliest, they would sit on a dharna on November 1 outside the office of the V-C. The issue was also raised by PUTA president, Akshaya Kumar, during the Senate meeting, recently.
On the Academic Performance Indicator (API), the Association decided that the decision will be taken after receiving feedback from all teachers. The PUTA Executive has framed a draft of the score card on points where University Grants Commission (UGC) is silent. These suggestions have been circulated among faculty members who are requested to give their feedback within three days.
Kumar said, “After going through the suggestions, the decision on API will be taken within three days which will be communicated to the authorities. As there is ambiguity over certain areas where UGC remains silent including rating of teachers’ work as a research guide, published papers, members of an advisory board or a reviewer of a journal and contribution in a project.” As per the draft framed by PUTA Executive, equal points are suggested for all teachers involved in a project irrespective of the responsibility and role.
Regarding the Central status of PU, the issue will be forwarded by PUTA Executive to the Syndicate in their coming meeting. “Central status and retirement age are the two issues that will be forwarded to the Syndicate and then further decided by the Senate,” said Prof Mohammad Khalid, PUTA Secretary.
