Nokia staff fear job loss due to shift in production

Workers at Nokia’s Chennai plant are worried that the management’s recent move of diverting production to other plants in countries such as Vietnam and China could lead to job retrenchments over a period of time.

Workers at Nokia’s Chennai plant are worried that the management’s recent move of diverting production to other plants in countries such as Vietnam and China could lead to job retrenchments over a period of time. According to the union leaders, Nokia has shifted production of some low-end models, including the new Asha series, out of Chennai.

At a press meet on Thursday, A Soundararajan MLA, honourary president of Nokia India Thozhilalar Sangam and a prominent CITU leader form Tamil Nadu, said production at the Chennai plant has in the past few months come down to 4 million pieces a month from 13 million earlier. ?We are worried about workers’ job security. There are around 20,000 workers,? he said.

Soundararajan said the company has shifted out production of the Asha series and cut down the shifts to two from three. According to the union, the weekly one-day leave has been increased to two days because of poor production. “The management has given enough indications that if the current situation continues, there could be retrenchment of employees. We won?t allow this,? Soundararajan said.
