Now, Ajay Devgn’s ‘Singham Returns’ box office collections run into Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ wall

Ajay Devgn’s ‘Singham Returns’ generated box office collections of Rs 53.14 cr.

The Ajay Devgn-starrer ‘Singham Returns’ got off to a massive start, generating box office collections of Rs 32.09 crore and Rs 21.05 crore on Friday and Saturday with grand total of Rs 53.14 crore nett

But after the initial burst, ‘Singham Returns’ staying power was tested and it was found wanting – it eventually fell just short of Salman Khan-starrer Kick’s 2-day collections (Rs 53.55).

‘Kick’ had collected Rs 26.40 crore on Day 1, followed by Rs 27.15 next day.

Big numbers are, however, expected from the Rohit Shetty film on Sunday. Interestingly, the two-day collections of ‘Singham Returns’ has been more than the Week 1 business of ‘Singham’ (Rs 51.25 crore).

The film has become Ajay Devgn biggest opener ever but falls a bit short of record for Rohit Shetty whose Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Chennai Express’ did Rs 33.12 crore on the day of release.

The film maintained its speedy run over the weekend, collecting a big total in its opening weekend and marching towards the Singham’s lifetime business of Rs 100.30 crore net. With Monday being a holiday in some states, the film should add a substantial figure to the booty.

The next battle for ‘Singham Returns’ for top B.O. honours is also against ‘Kick’ which entered the super-elite Rs 100 crore club within five days – the Ajay Devgn-starrer is expected to cross Rs 100 crore nett on Day 5 too, but anything can happen.

‘Singham Returns’ has also done good business overseas, collecting nearly Rs 3 crore, including Rs 1 crore from the USA/Canada market. Tt has become the biggest box office opener for Ajay Devgn in UAE with 750,000 dirham.

UAE Thursday opening 750,000 dirhams.

The film started on a thunderous note and the national holiday helped it surpass ‘Kick’ box office collections on opening day by a couple of crores, thus emerging the highest opener of 2014. The film collected Rs 32.09 crore on Day 1 to surpass previously-released Salman Khan-Jacqueline Fernandez starrer Kick that collected Rs 26.40 crore.

The question is, will ‘Singham Returns’ maintain its momentum over the weekdays (Tuesday onwards).

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, ?I genuinely believe it will, since the audience feedback is beyond positive. The question is, will Singham Returns touch Rs 200 cr nett mark? It’s a wait and watch situation right now.?

Over the years, ‘Singham Returns’ director Rohit Shetty has become a reputable brand, with six back-to-back hits, which includes three Rs 100 crore grosser (Golmaal-3, Bol Bachchan, Singham) and one Rs 200 cr grosser (Chennai Express). The expectations from ‘Singham Returns’ has been humongous and its release was perfectly timed too ? Independence Day.

So, expectations are that it will continue to perform well and keep giving Salman Khan fans the heebie-jeebies.
