The number of vehicles in the streets of Assam have grown substantially between 2010 and 2011. As per the latest figures from the central government, the number of motor vehicles registered in Assam stood at 15.82 lakh in 2011 as against 13.83 lakh in 2010, showing a growth of almost 14.4 per cent.
This data emerged in the 'Statistical Year Book, India 2013' released earlier this week by the Ministry of Statistics
and Programme Implementation in New Delhi. However, this is only a small percentage of the national figure. Across India, the number of total registered vehicles in 2011 were 14.18 crore.
The number of two-wheelers registered in Assam stood at 9.58 lakh in 2011, up from 8.30 lakh in 2010.
The data included all vehicles, including newly registered ones.
A total of 59,742 Light Motor Vehicles were counted in Assam in 2011, as against 51,185 in 2010. The number of cars went up to 2.69 lakh in 2011 from 2.32 lakh in 2010.
Registered taxis in the state stood at 28,161 in 2011 as against 24,088 in the previous year. There was also a similar jump in the number of jeeps and miscellaneous veichles registered in Assam. In the commercial vehicle segment, the number of goods vehicles registered in Assam stood at 1.71 lakh in 2011, up from 1.56 lakh in 2010.
The data also reveled that the number of buses registered in Assam stood at 14,741 in 2011 compared to 13,859 in 2010.
