When it came to movies nothing fell in place. I feel unfortunate to be an outsider. I wish I had a godfather or someone to guide me in making the correct decisions
Once a poster boy of daily soaps, now we see you hosting crime based show. Is it a conscious decision to stay away from fiction?
There was a time when I enjoyed doing daily soaps, but over the past few years I have been finding crime shows quite interesting. It immediately grabs attention in real and reel life. Currently, I am busy with Savdhaan India on Life Ok. Before this, I was hosting a show called Police Files on Big Magic, which also re-enacts real crime stories for the audience. I did three seasons of it in a row. In fact, the team of Savdhaan India has signed me well in advance for the show’s new season.
You make sporadic appearances on fiction shows. Why is that?
Earlier, I did whatever came my way, but over a period of time, I realised that I needed to be selective in what I do. I get a lot of daily soap offers, but I feel that they are patronised by a small segment of the audience these days. Earlier I used to shoot for three shows at a time— it was madness, running from one studio to the other. I am just exhausted now with all this. Though I am enjoying the crime genre currently, I want to explore comedy in the near future.
Today a lot of actors also invest their time and money in other activities. What do you do when you are not busy doing television?
When I am not busy doing television, I concentrate on my property business. I am building something outside Mumbai and I’d rather not talk much about it now. During my time off, I learnt Taekwondo and have earned a black belt in this martial arts form.
You said you would like to do comedy on television. What’s holding you back?
Before Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, there was this comedy show, Dekh Bhai Dekh that made me popular on television. Years ago, I was offered Comedy Circus, but I could not take it up then as I was busy with my daily soap commitments.
