A police constable was killed and 25 others were injured as a Veraval-bound bus of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSTRC) fell off a bridge in Vanthali taluka of Junagadh district on Monday. The accident happened when the driver of the bus tried to overtake an auto-rickshaw. while crossing a bridge over Madhuvanti river near Kanja village of Vanthali taluka, police said. As the driver lost control of the vehicle, the bus fell into the river, injuring police constable Naresh Sadiya (22) and 25 others who were travelling in the bus. Vanthali police said around 35 passengers were travelling in the bus and that the injured had been rushed to civil hospital in Junagadh. The accident took place at around 9:30 am.
“The constable was on his way back to Veraval after completing some office work in Junagadh. He was posted with Veraval police station in the neighbouring Gir Somnath district,” Vanthali police sub-inspector R J Thummar said.
“The rest of the injured are out of danger. However, many have sustained serious injuries on their hands and legs,” he said. On the basis of a complaint, filed by Rajesh Savaliya, a resident of Gir Somnath district and one of the passengers in the bus, Vanthali police have booked the bus driver, Dana Lubha, for causing death by negligence, causing hurt by act, endangering life and rash driving.
