The Oshiwara police, investigating the death of a 56-year-old NRI businessman after he reportedly fell off a highrise Sunday, reconstructed the alleged incident. After throwing a dummy of the same height and weight as the deceased from the highrise, police were said the Oman-based businessman,Punyakant Phillip Raju, had fallen off the 27th floor where he had planned to buy a duplex flat.
Police said three days after the death, they found a construction worker who had met the deceased on the 27th floor of the highrise minutes before he was found dead. We reconstructed the fall to find out whether he fell or was pushed or had jumped from the building. A second postmortem report is awaited, said Cherring Dorje, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone Nine).
A senior officer said the construction worker met Raju while the latter was seated on the edge of a 27th-floor apartment. He had asked Raju why he was seated there, to which the latter had replied that he was trying to get some fresh air. Raju asked the boy if there was a mobile network issue in the building, after which the boy left. We are probing all angles, said the officer.
Police said when they briefly questioned the Rajus family, they told him that he had not been depressed and that he had no reason to commit suicide. Police are yet to record statements of Rajus wife and children, who arrived in the city from the US Monday.
The police said possibility of suicide was unlikely.
The dummy landed in the same spot as Raju. If Raju was pushed, he would have possibly landed on the road outside the building, said the official.
Raju had arrived in the city two days before his death. He visited the 28-storeyed Lashkariya Building around 10.30 am Sunday and approved of a duplex flat through a broker who has an office in the buildings basement. He had told the broker that he would return in the evening with his financier. He entered the building, as recorded in the visitors' register, around 5.55 pm the same day. The body was found on the buildings basement around 6.20 pm.
