The message from the newly appointed chairman of National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (Nabard), Umeshchandra Sarangi, to the employees, was quite loud and clear – perform or perish. At the maiden interaction with Nabard MD, executive directors and chief general managers on Tuesday, Sarangi exhorted to work unitedly to achieve faster and overall growth and financial inclusion through encouraging timely adequate and hasslefree credit to small and marginal farmers in particular.

Informed sources told FE that Sarangi explained that the draft of the 11th plan has envisaged an inclusive and faster growth and it aims at a double digit growth. The small and medium farmers may be left out from this growth, and thus, Nabard would put in efforts to make farming viable. Sarangi said that Nabard would also make efforts to convert microfinancing into a national movement.

Sarangai admitted that Nabard?s vision and mission should be changed.

Nabard?s present mission is to promote sustainable and equitable agriculture and rural prosperity through effective credit support, related services, institutional development and other innovative initiatives. ?As the times have changed our vision will be amended. The organisation should have an edacious goal,? he noted.

Sarangi made it clear that he would not tolerate interpersonal differences and no dissent would be entertained once a firm decision on any matter is taken.

Sarangi?s obvious reference was at the burgeoning groupisim and inter-departmental differences within the organisation.

?There will be premium for excellence. However, there should not be unwarranted interpersonal differences.

There will be freedom for all to express their views but once a final decision is taken, everyone should implement it with full commitment,? he added.
