Philips Electronics begins operations at Chakan plant

Philips Electronics India commenced operations at its greenfield healthcare development and manufacturing centre at Chakan in Pune on Thursday.

Philips Electronics India commenced operations at its greenfield healthcare development and manufacturing centre at Chakan in Pune on Thursday. The plant is slated to roll out a range of diagnostic imaging and medical devices designed and developed for India to take healthcare to underserved markets. It will make these entry-level diagnostic devices both for the Indian as well as other emerging markets and expand the footprint of Royal Philips Electronics in India.

Philips had acquired two companies that were leading players in the economy segment in India ? Alpha X-ray Technologies (India) and Meditronics (India). These companies are now integrated into Philips Healthcare which will be the platform for rolling out new products from Royal Philips Electronics.

Rajeev Chopra, managing director and vice-chairman, Philips India, said, ?Inorganic growth would remain part of Philips strategy for growth in India.? Chopra did not disclose the investments at the plant but said it was significant.

?To start with, two of the five products that Philips is present in will be made in India which is radiology and cardiology, but in future other products from its oncology, critical care and respiratory care could be launched,? said Krishna Kumar, president, Philips Healthcare India.

For the entry-level products they have worked on aspects such as reliability and capability at affordable costs, Gene Saragnese, global CEO of Imaging Systems at Philips Healthcare said.
