Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Professor Arun Kumar Grover on Wednesday delivered the prestigious C V Raman Lecture at the Department of Physics. Prof Grover is the first alumnus of the university to deliver the lecture.
The Department of Physics hosted the annual Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) C V Raman Lecture, where Prof Grover, an alumnus of the department, delivered the lecture on “S S Bhatnagar, C V Raman, Homi Bhabha and Research in Physics at Lahore and Chandigarh”.
The DAE’s Raman lectures are delivered by distinguished scientists and the selection of the speaker for each lecture is done by the Indian Physics Association (IPA). The lecture series was initiated in the year 1989 by the IPA , Mumbai with the help of the grant from the DAE.
At the lecture, Professor Grover talked about the lives of Indian icons, including Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Piara Singh Gill, Homi J Bhabha and C V Raman. He also discussed and compared the growth of research in science at PU in the pre- and post-independence era. He appreciated the role of Professors B M Anand and H S Hans in the growth of the Department of Physics to the present level as one of the best research departments in the country.
Apart from Professor H S Hans, President of Chandigarh chapter of IPA, senior officers including Prof Manmohan Gupta, Prof Madhu Raka, Dean University Instructions (DUI), deans, chairpersons and directors of various faculties, departments, institutes and centres were also present.
