Boeing said it had asked airlines using Honeywell fixed emergency beacons to inspect the devices on most of its worldwide fleet to gather data for regulators following a recent fire on board a parked 787 Dreamliner. Britain’s accident investigation board has recommended worldwide inspections of lithium battery-powered emergency locator transmitters in the wake of the fire on an Ethiopian Airlines-owned Dreamliner in London earlier this month. ?Boeing is asking specific operators of 717, Next-Generation 737, 747-400, 767 and 777s to inspect aircraft with the Honeywell fixed emergency locator transmitters,? a Boeing spokesman said in an emailed statement on Sunday.
Human rights court to hear CIA Polish jail case
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has agreed to consider a second case brought against Poland by a man who alleges he was held illegally in a secret CIA jail on Polish territory. The application was submitted by lawyers for Saudi-born Abu Zubaydah, who says he was held in a facility in north-east Poland as part of a CIA-run global network to detain and interrogate suspected al-Qaeda operatives. His case was on Monday listed by the ECHR as having been ?communicated?, which means the court has ruled his application to the court is admissible, and has contacted the Polish government to invite it to respond to the allegations.
Pope says Vatican bank must be transparent
Pope Francis said the troubled Vatican bank must become ?honest and transparent? and that he will listen to the advice of a commission he has set up on whether it can be reformed or shut down altogether. Earlier in the day, the Vatican said it has signed an agreement with Italy over exchanging financial and bank information to combat money laundering. ?The Holy See and the Vatican City State take international responsibilities concerning anti money laundering and the financing of terrorism very seriously and Italy is an especially important partner for us,? the Vatican said in a statement. The statement confirmed a report by Reuters last week. The Vatican has been struggling to reform its bank whose reputation has been tarnished by decades of financial scandals.
Whistleblower: Olympus ignored Japan court order
Camera and medical equipment maker Olympus is facing another legal battle over its treatment of a whistleblower employee a year after Japan’s Supreme Court ruled it should reinstate the man in his regular job. Masaharu Hamada has been assigned by Olympus to quality training, in which he has no experience. He sees the assignment as harassment. He wants the Tokyo district court to order Olympus to abide by the top court’s ruling. Olympus says it complied with the Supreme Court decision. Hamada was joined on Monday by Yoshihisa Ishikawa who is suing Olympus for sending him to work under Hamada.
Egypt arrests more Islamists as EU?s top official visits
Egyptian police detained two leaders of a Muslim Brotherhood-allied party in the latest wave of arrests of prominent Islamists, while the European Union’s top diplomat held talks on Monday with officials in Cairo in an attempt to mediate an end to the country’s crisis, officials said. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s visit to the Egyptian capital is her second since the army ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi on July 3. The trip underscores the alarm felt in the West over the violence that has killed more than 260 people and all but dashed hopes of political reconciliation in the deeply divided country. The bloodiest incident took place over the weekend, when security forces killed at least 83 Morsi supporters in clashes in Cairo.
