Quick view: EC notice to Mulayam overpoll code violation

The Election Commission on Friday issued a show cause notice to the ruling Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav

The Election Commission on Friday issued a show cause notice to the ruling Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for allegedly threatening school teachers appointed on contract by the Uttar Pradesh government to either vote for his party in Lok Sabha polls or risk losing permanent status. Holding that Yadav has prima facie violated the Model Code of Conduct, the Commission has given him time till Sunday evening to send his reply, failing which it will take action. On April 3, addressing an election rally in Bulandshahr in UP, Yadav had allegedly threatened shiksha mitras (government primary school teachers on contract) to vote for SP or else they would not be made permanent. ?As far as shiksha mitras are concerned, we have done it (made them permanent)… we have done it, now give your vote. If you do not vote, we?ll withdraw it,? EC quoted Yadav as saying.

Azam says will not apologise, questions EC relief to Shah

UP minister Azam Khan on Friday ruled out an apology for alleged hate speech and questioned why the Election Commission had not lifted the ban on his campaigning like it had done for BJP leader Amit Shah. Hitting out at EC for lifting the ban on Shah on Thursday but not granting him similar relief, Khan said he would move the Supreme Court against its order barring him from campaigning in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party termed the EC decision on Shah as ?unfortunate? and alleged it was doing ?injustice? to Khan. Alleging that the EC action against him smacked of ?undeclared Emergency?, Khan, who is a prominent Muslim face of SP, said he had not done anything that warranted an apology.

?I have not committed a crime,? he told a press conference in Rampur.

AAP slams BJP for disrupting Kejriwal?s campaign

AAP on Friday slammed the BJP for allegedly disrupting Arvind Kejriwal?s campaign in Varanasi twice and has termed it ?acts of frustration?. ?The sudden spurt in the growing BJP attacks on Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal at Varanasi is a clear reflection of the frustration in the Narendra Modi camp. In less than 12 hours, BJP workers under guidance from their state and national leadership, have twice attempted to disrupt Kejriwal?s campaign in Varanasi,? AAP said in a statement. ?In full public view, the AAP leaders have been pushed, abused and shown

obscene gestures by BJP workers,? it said. Kejriwal is

contesting against BJP?s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi from the temple town.
