Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has refused to meet a US Congressional delegation in protest against the arrest and subsequent treatment, that reportedly included a strip-search, meted to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade by New York police last week.
The meeting, which was slated yesterday, did not take place because Rahul Gandhi wanted to register his disapproval of the American treatment of Indian diplomat, sources said.
The delegation comprising Congressmen George Holding (Republican - North Carolina), Pete Olson (Republican – Texas) David Schweikert (Republican - Arizona), Robert Woodall (Republican - Georgia) and Madeleine Bordallo (Democrat - Guam) is scheduled to visit Ahmadabad tomorrow and later to Mumbai.
However, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has already said he would not meet them. It is likely that Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan would also toe the line set by Delhi.
39-year-old Divya Khobragade, a 1999-batch IFS officer, was taken into custody on a street in New York as she was dropping her daughter to school before being released on a USD 250,000 bond after pleading not guilty in court.
