RCom slashes 3G data tariffs by 50%

Reliance Communications (RCom) slashed its 3G data prices by 50% on Thursday bringing the 3G tariff on par with its 2G data tariff. With this, the Anil Ambani-promoted company has taken the data price war from 2G to 3G.

The tariff would be applicable for postpaid and prepaid connections across all the 13 circles where the company has 3G spectrum. One GB of 3G data downloaded would cost R123 now, while the same in 2G would cost R125. The company said the move is aimed at increasing data usage by smartphone users, who make up 40% of the total subscribers in the industry.

Data revenue from all services account for only 5-6% of revenues of telecom operators in India. In June, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Aditya Birla Group companies Idea Cellular had cut their 2G data tariffs by 80-90% in some circles.
