Response good on Day 1, second list unlikely for some courses

Admissions to Delhi University (DU) may have been delayed by more than a week due to the row over the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), but that doesn?t seem to have diminished students? enthusiasm to get into the university, with colleges receiving good turnout of applicants on the first day and seats for popular courses filling up first. In fact, some colleges are considering not taking out a second cut-off list for certain courses.

At Hindu College on North Campus, courses such as Political Science (Honours) and History (Honours) witnessed a huge rush on the first day of undergraduate admissions. According to Hindu College Principal Pradyuman Kumar, more than 80 per cent seats in these two courses have been filled. In science courses like Physics (H), Botany (H), Chemistry (H) and Zoology (H), around 50 per cent admissions were made on Tuesday.

?There are two more days left for admissions on the basis of the first cut-off list. If an appreciable number of students come to our college tomorrow and day after, there is a possibility that we might not have a second cut-off list for popular courses such as political science, history and some science courses,? Kumar said.

While the total undergraduate seats at the college are 750, around 250 students were admitted on Tuesday.

The first day of admissions saw SRCC filling up 268 of its 501 seats for BCom (H) and 102 of 123 seats for Economics Honours.

Miranda House on North Campus admitted 180-plus applicants on the first day. ?We have received a great response to our course in history, political science and various sciences,? Pratibha Jolly, Principal, Miranda House, said.

At some South Campus colleges, admissions went beyond 1 pm. At 7 pm, Gargi College Principal Shashi Tyagi was still admitting students.

Tyagi said, ?Gargi College has filled around 45 per cent of its seats. Against 123 seats in BCom (H), over 62 admissions have been made. I am still signing admissions forms. Even though we have informed applicants that admissions will be made tomorrow, they want to take admission today itself.?

Among the science courses at Gargi, Microbiology (H) has admitted 25 out of the 31 seats.

At Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, 100 admissions were conducted for 953 seats in total, with BCom Honours, Maths Honours and Political Science Honours attracting the maximum applicants. ?We will not be taking out a second list for Maths Honours, Political Science Honours and Economics Honours,? Principal P K Khurana said.
