The CBI arrested absconding retired deputy superintendent of police K M Vaghela, wanted for his role in the 2003 Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter, from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the wee hours of Thursday.
Vaghela, a key accused in the case, landed at the airport around 3.30 am on a Qatar Airways flight. During the immigration clearance, he was intercepted by officials after they found there was a look-out circular in the name of Vaghela.
“Vaghela told us he was coming from the US via Dubai. We established his identity and intimated the CBI. Vaghela was handed over to Sardarnagar police station,” said a source at the airport.
The CBI produced him before a special CBI court, which sent him to judicial custody in Sabarmati Central Jail.
Vaghela was police inspector with the Detection of Crime Branch and was a part of the team which allegedly killed Sadiq on January 13, 2003, in the city. He has been chargesheeted as one of the key accused along with seven other policemen in the case.
Barot moves HC for bail
Suspended deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Tarun Barot, who is in Nadiad jail in connection with Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter case, Thursday filed a bail application before the Gujarat High Court. His bail plea was rejected by a special CBI court last month. According to the CBI chargesheet, it was Barot who took the custody of Sadiq from Mumbai days before he was killed in an encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city in 2003.
