SAIL denies violation of green norms

The country?s top corporate houses and public sector firms have been found guilty of excess mining of iron ore in Odisha by the Shah Commission. According to the commission?s report, a total of 130 lessees were found to have mined extra 278 mt iron ore without the required approvals over a period of 10 years, with a total value of R45,403 crore. SAIL has been found to have mined 8.2 mt excess iron ore during the period from its two mines Bolani and Katla Barsua.

??We have replied to the notices. We are complying with all the rules and regulations. We have not violated any rule,?? SAIL chairman C S Verma said without divulging any further details. According to the commission report, 15 prospecting licenses were granted by the state government in the forest areas where no approval under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 has been obtained by the prospecting license-holders during the period.
