Salman Khan ‘Kick’ box office collections crawl towards Rs 300 crore mark

Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ box office collections suffered a slowdown, affecting its chance to beat ‘Dhoom 3’.

Soaring with early success, Salman Khan’s ‘Kick’ box office collections ? which smoothly crossed the Rs 200 crore mark on the 11th day ? have hit a speed breaker in bid to reach the Rs 500 crore target, achieved only by the blockbuster of them all, Aamir Khan’s ‘Dhoom 3’.

After relentless march, ‘Kick’ box office collections have slowed down over the last few days. This has even affected the film nearest target, which is to reach and breach the Rs 300-crore mark.

‘Kick’ box office collections on Week 2, as pegged by trade analyst Taran Adarsh, are: Friday Rs 9.22 crore, Saturday Rs 10.62 crore, Sunday Rs 14.18 crore, Monday Rs 5.08 crore, Tuesday Rs 4.21 crore, Wednesday Rs 3.91 crore, Thursday Rs 3.80 crore, capping the seven-day total (India) at Rs 51.02 crore.

At the end of second week, the overall (worldwide) box office collections of the Salman Khan-starrer stands at Rs 276.46 crore, which includes Rs 215.11 crore from domestic box office. The tally is set to go up significantly as many screens overseas are yet to report their figures.

In comparison, after collecting Rs 188.99 crore in the first week, Aamir Khan’s ‘Dhoom 3’ had minted a total of Rs 252.70 crore at the domestic box office by the end of second week.

Kick made its foray into the coveted Rs 200 crore club in the second weekend. Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Krrish 3’, Shah Rukh Khan?s ‘Chennai Express’ and Aamir Khan?s ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Dhoom 3’ were the only other films to have created this record.

For trade analyst N P Yadav, the film?s unopposed presence seems to be the redeeming factor. ?The film is doing well only because of Salman Khan. He is a ?massy? star. Kick had no opposition for two weeks and that helped it?s cause tremendously. The film was also promoted very well. The promo and the song Jumme ki Raat created the right buzz. The audience does not want to see creativity in a film like Kick. Viewers who love Salman Khan, want to see his attitude and dialogues on screen and nothing taxing,? explains Yadav.

Film Distributor and Exhibitionist Akshay Rathi says, ?Kick was given a second boost after Tuesday, since a lot of people who observe Ramzan do not watch films during that period. That entire crowd took to the theatres during the rest of the week after braving the heavy downpour, especially in Maharashtra.?

What remains to unfold is how much business does ‘Kick’ earn before its long run can be cut short by Entertainment, Akshay Kumar?s comedy opposite Tamannah Bhatia, that has released today. ?Between Singham Returns and ‘Kick’, Entertainment will have a tough fight to get proper shows. The promos are looking good and Akshay Kumar has the knack for comedy, hence it should work well in his favour,? says Yadav.

Talking about the single screen turn-out, Rathi points out, ?India has 6,000 operational single-screens out of which Kick released in 3,800 theatres so ‘Entertainment’ will still have some options of single-screen audience.?
