Samsung 4G launch awaits ecosystem

Samsung, which is ready to bring a plethora of 4G-enabled smartphones and handheld devices to the market, says it will have to wait till mobile operators put in place effective LTE networks that support high-speed data services.

Samsung, which is ready to bring a plethora of 4G-enabled smartphones and handheld devices to the market, says it will have to wait till mobile operators put in place effective LTE networks that support high-speed data services.

“By 2015, operators would have rolled out networks in LTE or 4G technology and the ecosystem would be just right to bring out 4G-enabled products,” said Vineet Taneja, country head, IT and mobile division at Samsung India, without elaborating on specific devices.

Apple already has two 4G-enabled devices ? the iPhone 5S and 5C ? in a tie-up with Airtel which provides the 4G network. LG also recently launched the G2 in partnership with Airtel. HTC’s One M8 is another 4G-enabled product which will be launched in India soon.

While tech enthusiasts had expected a 4G device from Samsung, the company on Thursday launched a 3G version of its Galaxy S5 smartphone. Priced between R51,000 and R53,000 the S5 boasts of the latest Android KitKat version, 5.1 inch AMOLED screen, 16 megapixel rear camera, a fingerprint scanner for security and a heart rate monitor. “We also have a 4G version of this device which will be launched once the ecosystem is in place,” added Taneja
