Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone to be unveiled today

Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to feature bigger screen, improved rear camera, biometric functions.

Samsung Electronics will unveil a new version of its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone today ‘Samsung unPacked 5″ event at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to feature a bigger screen, an improved rear camera and biometric functions such as iris recognition or a fingerprint scanner. It may also come with an improved Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy S5 launch has been brought forward by around three weeks after sales of Samsung Galaxy S4 came in weaker than expected.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest smartphone maker, is bracing for its weakest mobile annual profit growth in seven years amid fierce competition from Apple Inc. and Chinese vendors, and as growth for high-end smartphones eases due to near saturation in many markets.

The launch at the annual industry gathering is set to reflect a new emphasis on costs, marking a departure from the glitzy marketing Samsung has deployed in the past, including the use of actors and a full live orchestra to launch the S4 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall last year.

A bigger screen for the S5 may not become much of a selling point as Apple Inc. is widely expected to introduce large-screen smartphones – Samsung’s mainstay products – later this year. More challenges may come from China’s PC maker Lenovo Group which has bought Google Inc’s Motorola Mobility handset unit for $2.9 billion.

Samsung has been making the headlines for weeks now especially with the market keen on finding out what its next flagship phone will be like. Nonetheless, this is not the only thing people should be looking forward to during the MWC. According to the reports, Samsung Group will be revealing a Galaxy Note slate of its bendable slate. BGR reported Samsung Electronics will also be showing a next-generation tablet prototype bendable up to 90 degrees.

The upcoming slate will let users pick between a laptop and tablet mode. Bending the device to 90 degrees will allow users to switch between two units easily. It is likely Samsung will release the tablet later this year. Further details about the device are awaited.
