Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sparked fresh controversy as he said the country?s destiny would have been different if Sardar Patel, the country?s first home minister, who was born in Gujarat, had become the first prime minister.
Modi, who shared the dais with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while inaugurating Sardar Patel National Memorial here, said: ?Every Indian still regrets that he (Patel) did not become the first prime minister. Had he been the first prime minister, the country?s destiny would have been different.?
