The body of a 25-year-old woman was found in a semi-nude state in Southeast Delhi’s Nehru Place in Delhi on Tuesday morning.
The body was found opposite Astha Kunj Park, around 50 metres ahead of the Nehru Place Metro station and the police post in the area.
Police said it appeared that the woman was murdered elsewhere and her body dumped at the spot.
The incident came to light around 7.30 am on Tuesday, after a tea stall owner and a taxi driver in the area saw the body lying next to a pillar and informed police.
Speaking to Newsline, Rajnish, a driver at a taxi stand in the area, said, “I came to park my taxi and saw the body lying next to the road. There were no blood marks on the road. The police came to the spot and the body was taken away.”
Police sources said a pair of black jeans was found lying next to the body, which had strangulation marks.
Police said the stretch from where the body was recovered did not appear to be the place where the woman was murdered. “There is no evidence whatsoever at the spot, hence, the body was clearly dumped... after the murder,” a senior police officer said.
Police said that no footwear was found at the scene. “This further shows that the girl was not murdered at this spot,” the official said.
Since the body was in a semi-nude state, there was speculation that it could be a case of rape and murder. “We are not completely ruling out rape but the cause of death has not yet been ascertained,” the official said.
The body has been sent to AIIMS for preservation while police try to ascertain the identity of the woman. “Once the identity is ascertained, the body will be sent for post-mortem,” the official said.
Police said they are going through reports of missing persons and have zeroed in on a few cases. “We have identified certain cases of missing girls and kidnapping in the past two days, and have called their families for identification. Identifying the body should not be a problem as it is not battered or decomposed,” said a senior police officer.
