Seven metro projects could be put on track

The urban development ministry is examining the proposals of seven metro rail projects in different parts of the country, with a total investment of Rs 43,360 crore. This is in addition to the metro projects that are now in various stages of construction, and which entail an investment of Rs 67,479 crore.

The new projects include the Delhi to Faridabad link, the extension of Delhi Metro from Anand Vihar ISBT to Vaishali, Ghaziabad Metro, the metro link from Jahangirpuri to Badli, the extension of Delhi Metro to Bahadurgarh (Haryana), Delhi MRTS phase III, the Kochi Metro rail project, the metro in Kerala and the Hyderabad Metro rail project. All these projects are currently awaiting various stages of clearances and the total route length of the seven projects is 267 km.

The Centre is currently holding talks about the comprehensive mobility plan for the extension of the Delhi Metro to Faridabad with the government of Haryana. The project is yet to be approved by the Delhi government, which is a 50% equity holder along with the Centre. The metro link is 13.9 km long and involves an estimated cost of Rs 2,028 crore.

The extension of the Delhi Metro from Anand Vihar ISBT to Vaishali, Ghaziabad, is another link that under consideration. This is estimated to cost Rs 320 crore and has a route length of 2.6 km. The Delhi government is yet to give its in-principle approval for this link.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has submitted a brief project report of the Jahangirpuri- Badli- Delhi metro link for its in-principle approval. The link is 3.4 km long and is slated to cost Rs 394 crore. Haryana has also submitted its detailed project report to Delhi in March this year for the extension of Delhi Metro to Bahadurgarh (Haryana). The urban development ministry has asked Haryana to submit its detailed proposal about its financing plan regarding the project. The ministry is also holding talks about Delhi MRTS phase-III with all the concerned stakeholders. The cost of this metro link is Rs 24,303 crore and it is 138.9 km long.

The Kochi Metro rail project in Kerala is awaiting the in-principle approval of the Cabinet. The project, which will take four years to commence, awaits the clearance of the empowered committee and the empowered group of ministers. A special purpose vehicle will be set up for this metro link, which would cost Rs 2,991 crore and is 25.3 km long.

Andhra Pradesh is yet to decide the model for the Hyderabad Metro?whether it would be a public private partnership or an equity-sharing model by the Centre and the state. Once the legislative assembly clears the proposal, the state will conduct fresh bidding for the project. The project was initially handed to the Maytas Infra-led consortium, which was later cancelled because the company failed to achieve financial closure. The cost of this metro link is Rs 11,892 crore and the route length is 71.29 km. Metro projects which are approved and are in various stages of construction include Mumbai Metro line I, which will connect Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar and which will have a route length of 11.07 km and cost Rs 2,356 crore and the Mumbai Metro line II, will link Charkop-Bandra- Man-kund, cover 31.87 km and will cost Rs 7,660 crore.

The metro project in Chennai is expected to be completed by 2014-2015. This link includes two lines?the Washermanpet to Chennai airport link and the Chennai Central to St? Thomas mount link. The cost of this project is estimated at Rs 14,600 crore and has a length of 22 km.

The Kolkata east-west Metro corridor is expected to be completed by 2015 and is expected to cost Rs 4,875 crore, while the Bangalore Metro has two lines, to be commissioned by 2012. The two links are Hesaraghatta Cross to Puttenahalli and Bayappanahalli to Mysore road terminal. The cost of the combined link is Rs 8,158 crore and the total route is 42.3 km long.

The Airport metro Express link has two parts to be commissioned by 2010?the New Delhi railway station to IGI airport will cost Rs 3,076 crore and is 19.2 km long, while the IGI airport to Dwarka Sector 21 link will cost Rs 793 crore and is 3.5 km long. The extension of the Delhi Metro to Noida is complete at a cost of Rs 827 crore and is 7 km long, while the extension of the Delhi Metro to Gurgaon will cost Rs 1,589 crore and is 14.47 km long.
