Police say spat between couple; in another case, man held for molesting woman cop.
Amid the debate for stricter laws to curb violence against women, two incidents involving cops were reported in the city. In one incident, a constable allegedly assaulted the daughter of a police sub-inspector, and in the other incident a woman traffic constable on duty was allegedly molested.
In the first case, the constable was reported to be dating the woman, the 32-year-old daughter of an Assistant Sub Inspector.
She alleged that constable Madhukar Rane (35) attached to the local arms division of the Mumbai Police had slapped her on Monday night following a dispute. Although she has registered a complaint under Section 354 (assault or use of criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code, police are taking it as a case of a spat between a couple.
According to the police, Rane and the woman are residents of Dadar Police Lines and have been dating for six years now. Her family pressed them to get married but Ranes family was against the match. On Monday night, the two got into an argument and in a fit of rage, Rane allegedly slapped her.
We had to register the complaint of molestation but are yet to verify the incident. It is only a fight between a couple, said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dadar division, Ramesh Dhanwat.
In the second incident, Matunga police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly molesting a traffic constable Kanchan Sapkale near Dadar Railway station. Sapkale was directing traffic when a man in a Honda City got into an argument with her. He claimed he was an official with an airline and told her not to keep him waiting. The fight escalated and he grabbed her name plate, after which he fled, said inspector Sujata Patil.
Sapkale had noted down the registration number of the car and sent a wireless alert. The car was intercepted and accused Arvind Wagh was handed over to Matunga police.
