President speech LIVE updates Budget Session 2018: President Ram Nath Kovind in his first address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha said that 2018 is an important year for realising the dream of ‘New India’. President Kovind said that empowerment and not appeasement of minorities is the government’s mantra. President in his joint address said that he is hopeful that triple talaq bill will be passed by Parliament so that Muslim women can live with dignity. After the speech, finance minister Arun Jaitley will table the Economic Survey 2017-18. The phase one of the budget session which got underway today will go on until February 9. The Parliament will meet again after recess from March 5 to April 6. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the current BJP-led NDA regime’s last full-fledged budget on February 1.

9.30 am: In his radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to President Ram Nath Kovind’s initiative to meet a group of “extraordinary” women, who were all path-breakers, and said women had broken through orthodoxy to achieve “extraordinary success”. Kovind had recently met India’s first woman merchant navy captain, the first woman passenger train driver and firefighter, among others, he said, calling them the “first ladies” in their respective fields.
