Alleging that “dirty water drawn from drains” was sprayed through water cannons to disperse protesters during the Bharat Bandh on July 5, the Samajwadi Party urged Governor B L Joshi to initiate a probe into the matter.
An SP delegation led by state party president Akhilesh Yadav and leader of Opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav met the Governor on Thursday and requested him to take action against those found responsible.
“The water sprayed through water cannons on our party workers, who were staging a peaceful protest, was filthy and infectious,” said Shivpal Yadav.
“A number of activists have fallen ill and they complained of severe skin problems. Protests are a form of expression in democracy but if the people in power stoop to such levels, then we are in for worse times.”
Talking to mediapersons after meeting the Governor, he said: “We have demanded an inquiry into the incident and action against those found responsible.” He said his party workers were protesting against the recent hike in fuel prices, an issue that Chief Minister Mayawati also claims to have protested against.
“Since we were targeted, it proves the BSP’s protest was a theatrical exercise. Over a dozen of our party workers received head injuries in the lathicharge and we have photographs to prove it,” he added.
The Governor, he added, was convinced that their complaint was genuine.
