Labour minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday asked states to step up efforts on job-training initiatives and tie up with corporates to increase skill development.
“India?s youth population is the largest in the world. Therefore, providing employment and imparting skills to them is a huge challenge. The Centre and states have to work together in this direction,” he said at a workshop of state labour officials.
“The Centre can formulate and simplify laws and policies, facilitate sharing of best practices and suggest way forward. But, states will have to take the lead in speedy implementation and execution on the ground level,” he said.
The workshop was aimed at finalising models and frameworks for enhancing employability and entrepreneurship in youth, and meeting the emerging skill needs of industry.
During the day-long workshop, participants deliberated on various issues, including re-establishing brand equity of ITIs, setting up Model ITIs and skill upgradation of unorganised sector workers.
