An Indian Revenue Service officer was arrested by the CBI for allegedly taking a bribe from the mastermind of the Stock Guru scam, Ulhas Prabhakar Khaire. The CBI said Yogendra Mittal, a 2006-batch IRS officer who was posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, was arrested on the allegation that he received illegal gratification worth crores of rupees from Khaire in exchange for an assurance that he would settle his case and not inform other investigative agencies.
A CBI spokesperson said, “It was alleged that a private person gave a huge amount of cash to the Income Tax Officer during Income Tax raids at his offices and residences on January 18-19, 2011”. He said the probe has revealed that Mittal had allegedly demanded and obtained a bribe from Khaire. Searches were conducted at nine places, including the offices and residences of Mittal, his relatives and two other I-T officers.
The official said Mittal was produced before a Special CBI court which has sent him to three-day police custody. His role in the Stock Guru scam is also being probed by the Enforcement Directorate.
