A day after he had requested the SC to recall the non bailable warrant issued against him, Sahara chief Subrata Roy surrendered to the Lucknow Police here today. Later he was taken into police custody and is likely to be produced in the CGM court in a while. The Lucknow Police is likely to ask for his transit remand so that he can be taken to New Delhi.
While his lawyer Ram Jethmalani had requested the SC to hear the case urgently but he will remain in custody till March 4 as the Apex court refused to take up his plea against the warrant today, saying there is “no urgency.”
It may be mentioned that he has been arrested following the Supreme Court’s non bailable warrant against him for not appearing in court in a case linked to his alleged failure to return investors’ money.
Earlier in the morning today, Roy declared that he was “not absconding” after a Lucknow police team searched his sprawling home in Sahara Shaher yesterday evening and could not find him. He has repeatedly cited his mother’s illness as a reason for not appearing in court. Stating that he was ready to “unconditionally” obey Supreme Court direction, Roy said he wanted to be with his “ailing mother under house arrest” till March 3, if Supreme Court permits this.
