The Supreme Court verdict recognising transgenders as third category of gender heralds victory in their efforts to claim their rightful place in the society, an organisation working for transgender sex workers said.

The judgment paves way for social, economic and political inclusion of transgender persons, the transgender sex workers at Ashodaya Samithi, an organization comprising female, male and transgender sex workers, said.

“What is heartening to note in the judgment is the articulation of our issues as human rights issues not merely as social or medical issues”, said Akram Pasha, community leader and Director of Ashodaya Academy.

Ashodaya Samithi has been striving for recognition of transgender sex workers as citizens of India and thus staking claims of equal rights. “Such rights begin with recognition of our gender to rights to education, employment, healthcare and other social entitlements”, said Pallavi,a transgender leader.

Leaders in Ashodaya Samithi said it will take a longer time for a change in societal perception about transgender people and social acceptance, but they said it is a humble beginning in the right direction.

“There are many issues to tackle - our education, employment, marriage, property rights, adoption rights and so on.. but we are happy today that the apex court has recognized us and has directed the central and state governments to work out a plan to include us and restore our rights”, said Girija a transgender person from Ashodaya.

Ashodaya Samithi also complimented the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) which had filed the PIL in the apex court that has assisted in the landmark judgment.
