Tata Motors unveils Revotron engine to boost petrol drive

Looking to scale up its presence in the petrol engine segment, India?s fourth largest carmaker

Looking to scale up its presence in the petrol engine segment, India?s fourth largest carmaker, Tata Motors, on Monday launched the all-new Revotron 1.2l ? a four-cylinder, turbo-charged petrol engine. The company said it aims to launch more such petrol engines to increase its contribution to the segment, which is, at present, just 5% of the total volumes.

?For consumers, the new range of petrol engines will represent low cost of ownerships,? said Tim Leverton, head (advanced and product engineering), Tata Motors. ?We are doing a number of things in this space and there will be a family of such engines as this represents the future. At present, it will cover all compact vehicles,? he said.

Tata Motors claims the new petrol engine family, or the Revotron series, has been developed based on consumer feedback. It will help bring in incremental mileage and performance for consumers, though the company refused to share further details. it is expected to make further announcements regarding the mileage at the upcoming Auto Expo, scheduled to be held next month.

?Petrol represents a huge opportunity for us. There is a huge demand for performance, refinement and fuel economy. We are going to address that with Revotron,? said Ranjit Yadav, president, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors.

Currently, petrol engines constitute about 55% of the total domestic passenger vehicle market. Tata Motors refused to put a number to the anticipated incremental growth in sales as a result of the petrolisation drive, though it admits the future products will have much greater ?petrol? focus.

The Revotron series has been developed in India in technological partnership with Bosch and Honeywell and others. The engine is CNG-capable and complies with BS-IV and the Euro-IV emission norms.
