Identifying mobile enterprise application services as the next growth area, India?s largest software exporter Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Tuesday opened its Silicon Valley Customer Collaboration Centre at Santa Clara in California, US.

The area is being tapped by major information technology services firms who were largely dependent on financial services for their revenues till date. N Chandrasekaran, CEO of TCS, identifies the area as part of non-linear growth plans to create a big presence in this segment.

The key model would be to develop customised customer-oriented mobile applications for enterprises in segments like retail, aviation, hospitality. The company would, however, not develop applications which would be directly retailed to customers.

For instance, its customer-oriented mobile applications would be designed through enterprises like, say a global or a local retail chain which facilitates easy billing and reward points for buying products from its stores. The retail chain in turn will sell the application to its customers.

TCS has already designed the cabin crew application services for British Airways. The service brings all information about traveling passenger to the iPads of the crew members and enables them to serve their passengers in an effective manner. The company is also devising an application for British Airways that puts all flight manuals on iPad, thus doing away the need of carrying numerous flight manuals.

The segment is a new vertical for the company, and therefore, it does not separately share the contribution from this area to its total revenues, but only adds this is a growing area. TCS has already signed up 60 customers for this business segment.

The applications are devised on all the four platforms on which mobile technology works.

?Silicon Valley is a perfect place for the centre given the match between the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of TCS and that of the valley,? Chandrasekaran said. ?The convergence of the innovation in the valley with highly scalable, high quality and cost-effective engineering strength of TCS will help jumpstart the innovation,? he added.

?TCS? decision to choose Silicon Valley as the global headquarters for its mobility solutions and next generation solutions unit is a significant contribution to California?s innovative economy,? Brook Taylor, deputy director at the California?s Governor?s Office of Business and Economic Development, said. The centre will also serve as the worldwide headquarters of TCS? mobility solutions unit, which aims to bring the benefits of emerging technologies to enterprises across all industries.
