Telangana takes shape, K Chandrasekhara Rao sworn in as CM

Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhara Rao promises a model state.

Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhara Rao, popularly known as KCR, was sworn in as the first chief minister of Telangana, India’s 29th state. He took oath along with 11 ministers, including his son KT Rama Rao and nephew T Harish Rao.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) won 63 of the 119 seats in the newly-formed Telangana assembly. Earlier during the day, ESL Narasimhan was sworn in as governor of both Telangana and the residuary Andhra Pradesh. The two states will share a governor and hyderabad as the common capital for 10 years.

The 60-year old KCR promised to make Telangana a role model for other states in the country. KCR said all rules and regulations across government departments would be simplified with single-window clearances. After the bifurcation of the state, Telangana’s profile is expected to be the 12th largest state with an economy of Rs 1,67,36,409 crore, growing at 13.41%.

The newly-formed state is set to shower incentives, including a special sops for the government employees. ?In line with the promises we made on the eve of the elections, welfare will be top on our agenda. In the next five years, the TRS government will spend Rs one lakh crore for the welfare on SCs, STs, Backward Classes and minorities. Of this, Rs 50,000 crore will be spent on SC welfare alone,? KCR said. He said that a Telangana state advisory council would be constituted with editors and other eminent people from various sectors to guide the government, KCR announced.

KCR also assured farmers that the government would soon implement its promise of waiving off farm loans up to Rs one lakh each and make Telangana the ?Seed Bowl of India? along with green house technologies.

About 10,000 closed-circuit television cameras would be installed across Hyderabad as part of its efforts to put an international-standard surveillance system in place. ?Hyderabad city has got international recognition. We will make it a world-class city with law and order as top priority,? Rao said. He said that various wings of the police like civil, armed reserve, special protection force, special police would soon be brought under one umbrella. ?We will study this possibility and bring all police units under one umbrella for better functioning,? KCR added.
